Murano Glass - SCILLA Basin - Black & Silver Leaf

The technique used to create this piece of art is nearly as ancient as the art of glassmaking. The artist creates the basin first, then the "Rostrato" technique is applied - layer by layer, like an incandescent "rope" all along the external diameter of the cup. 

Once this glass ring has been melted, it is then pulled, "spike" by "spike", with the "pinzette" or tweezers.  One row of spikes must be pulled within 20 to 30 seconds before the entire piece is put back into the 1300°C furnace.

This is a very precise, quick, intense, and dangerous process made all the more difficult due to the huge and scorching mass of glass which has to be pulled in and out of the furnaces and kept at a stable temperature so as not to risk thermal shock which would shatter the entire work.

If you have a color preference we will work with the artisan and provide you a quote for the finished piece. All custom orders will take a few weeks to create and ship - these are obviously not quick order pieces. We can also have the artist pre-drill the drain hole to your specifications.
